Welcome changes to the detention of asylum seekers

On July 29, the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship, Senator Chris Evans, announced a suite of changes to Australia's immigration detention system. Detention centres will now only be used as a last resort and detention of asylum seekers will occur for the shortest practical time.

This is a significant announcement for the Uniting Church. Our members, ministers and agencies have served those in detention centres for many years, advocating for an end to the policy of mandatory, arbitrary and indefinite detention.
